As Chairman of the Derby Arts Festival it gives me great pleasure to
welcome you to our centenary celebrations.
In addition to the annual Festival and Concert, extra events are planned
for 2008, details of which you will find in this Brochure. We hope these will
appeal to all our supporters and to the wider public who, perhaps, know little
about our Festival.
There have been many changes in the format of the Festival since its
inception one hundred years ago, some sections added and some lost. However, the
aims of the Festival Movement remain unaltered: to offer amateurs of all ages
the opportunity to perform in public and to receive written reports from
professional adjudicators.
Through dance, music making, singing and drama, the Festival can give
participants the encouragement and confidence needed to develop their creative
talents and, in some cases, form the ground for a future career.
Derby Arts Festival has an important part to play in the cultural life of
our city and I hope it will continue to flourish for many years. But for this to
happen we need your ongoing support, not only in this centenary year but also in
the years to come.
